Preparation for urodynamic testing

What is a urodynamic testing?

A full urodynamics procedure is a series of tests done to find out how well your child’s bladder is working. It provides information how much urine the bladder can hold, its sensitivity, expansion capacity, intravesical pressure in filling and voiding phases, urine flow, post void residual urine and outer urethral sphincter activity.

The examination begins with urination into a special vessel followed by the introduction of a small catheter into the bladder under a local anesthetic.

PREPARATION OF THE CHILD

  1. explain to your child how the examination is to be performed
  2. in the evening preceding the examination give your child a glycerine suppository for defecation
  3. the child should come to the facility with a full bladder
  4. NO FLUIDS are allowed 1 hour before the examination
  5. the child is allowed to eat normally
  6. if the child is not on prophylaxis, start using antibiotics one day before the examination and maintain the therapy for 3-5 days
  7. if the child is on prophylaxis, on the day preceding the examination increase the dosage to double and maintain this dosage for three days

What to bring:

  • clear (NAD) urine and a urine culture test performed no more than 7 days preceding the examination
  • complete medical documentation
  • 48-hour drinking and voiding diary

Urodynamic testing must not be performed in the case of a urinary tract infection!
